Prepare and monitor automated operations


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to prepare and monitor automated equipment for automated operation.

It includes following relevant workplace procedures; and selecting, testing and monitoring of automated plant and equipment.

Work is performed under limited or minimum supervision.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Prepare for automated operation

1.1

Hazards are identified; risks assessed and appropriate control measures are implemented

Traffic flow, weather and work area conditions are assessed and appropriate actions taken in accordance with workplace procedures

Communication method is trialled and confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures

Job task and equipment configurations are determined in accordance with workplace procedures

Select, inspect and prepare automated equipment for operation

2.1

Load characteristics are taken into account to ensure appropriate automated equipment is selected in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications

2.2

Automated equipment pre-operational checks are conducted in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures

2.3

All relevant automated equipment functions and safety checks are conducted and any faults reported in accordance with workplace procedures

Monitor automated equipment operation

3.1

Dangerous goods (DG) and hazardous materials are identified and handled in accordance with codes of practice and workplace procedures

3.2

Location of load is confirmed and communicated in accordance with workplace procedures and load plan

3.3

Relevant persons are advised of commencement of automated operation

3.4

Continuous monitoring of automated equipment operation is undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

communicating in accordance with required protocols

conducting automated equipment, safety and procedural checks

following workplace procedures

monitoring of automated equipment

operating and adapting to differences in automated equipment in accordance with workplace procedures

using required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with workplace procedures.


Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

characteristics, capabilities and limitations of automated equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications

reporting of identified hazards, faults or malfunctions in accordance with workplace procedures

risks and hazards when using automated equipment

workplace procedures for using automated equipment.


Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include:

relevant materials, tools, automated equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)

applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
